The World President of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), Ms Monica Zetzsche of Argentina, is paying a visit to the YWCA in South Africa which is one of the oldest affiliates on the African continent.

Her visit coincides with South Africa's celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Women's March to the Union Buildings.

Ms Zetzsche arrived on Friday, 14 July 2006, and upon her arrival immediately visited the Constitutional Court and Commission for Gender Equality on Constitutional Hill, the latter situated where the old women's prison was. Many prominent YWCA women were imprisoned there such as Ellen Kuzwayo, Joyce Seroke and Oshadi Mangena.

Ms Zetzsche proceeded from there to KwaZulu-Natal visiting a school in Madadeni for mentally challenged children founded by the YWCA in 1984.

Afterwards Ms Zetzsche will visit Soweto and the biggest YWCA centre in the country, the Dube Centre, to meet with members of the YWCA, young and old. She will also visit the Hector Petersen Memorial site.
