The World President of the Young Women's Christian Association
(YWCA), Ms Monica Zetzsche of Argentina, is paying a visit to
the YWCA in South Africa which is one of the oldest affiliates on
the African continent.
Her visit coincides with South Africa's celebrations of the 50th
anniversary of the Women's March to the Union Buildings.
arrived on Friday, 14 July 2006, and upon her arrival immediately
visited the Constitutional Court and
Commission for Gender Equality on Constitutional Hill, the latter
situated where the old women's prison was. Many prominent YWCA women
were imprisoned there such as Ellen Kuzwayo, Joyce Seroke and Oshadi
Ms Zetzsche proceeded from there to KwaZulu-Natal visiting a
school in Madadeni for mentally challenged children founded by the
YWCA in 1984.
Afterwards Ms Zetzsche will visit Soweto and the biggest YWCA
centre in the country, the Dube Centre, to meet with members of the
YWCA, young and old. She will also visit the Hector Petersen
